This was a unique challenge to face, but very much worth the experience. I completely understood the concept from the beginning — a companion to help waiting staff and customers find open tables. So, the tricky part was to build something that embodied some aspects of what these two words meant. Doing each word separately would be easy, but bringing them together in a balanced way required a fair amount of thought. I didn’t want to do something cliché like creating an icon of two people sitting at a table. Usually, I start by writing out the words and seeing if there’s an opportunity to be found with the glyphs. Sometimes, being too gimmicky can cause you to do too much.
For the word ‘Table’ I used Geo Sans. I simply extended the arm of the ‘T’ over the ‘b’ in table and voila! I used Geo Sans because I didn’t want it to be too whimsical and complex. It was just the right combination of clear, sturdy and chic. I also pulled a good amount of inspiration from the tables and chairs found in research. I had to approach ‘Bae’ a little different. It had to counter what was happening in ‘Table’. I landed on a typeface called Thinking of Betty. It was way more humanistic with the right amount of sass and sexiness in the curves. This was definitely something to be kept in mind because of the research done. The glyphs in both words are modified in order to connect and balance the two. All of the sharp edges and crevices in ‘Table’ have been rounded to help accomplish this.
